Responsibilities

The Research Librarian for the Life Sciences provides research support and reference service for the NCSU Libraries’ clientele. He or she works closely with faculty and students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to determine and meet service and information needs. This librarian designs and conducts classes, seminars, and tutorials in research methods, with an emphasis on web-based interaction. He or she collaborates with other science librarians and collection managers on projects and collection-building efforts that support the science and technology programs of the university. The position participates in departmental and library planning; and serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. NCSU Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Associate Head, Research and Information Services.

Qualifications

Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in library or information science. The successful candidate will have academic preparation in the life sciences and at least three years relevant professional experience. Candidates should have demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging technologies as they contribute to meeting the needs of researchers in the sciences. The ability to plan, design, and implement new services, projects, and procedures is expected. Outstanding written and oral communications and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Candidates should present a record of professional development and contribution. Preferred: Additional advanced degree in a relevant academic discipline.
