Occupational Summary

Data and GIS Services in the Duke University Libraries seeks applicants for a new internship designed to provide an overview of managing and supporting social science numeric/geospatial data in a research library. In previous years, interns have built collections in the library’s social science data catalog http://library.duke.edu/data/ >, helped design online data collections, and provided research consultations. The intern will work under the supervision of the Head of Data and GIS Services on metadata projects involving numeric data and geospatial collections at Duke.

Responsibilities

• Develops metadata for Duke Libraries’ numeric and geospatial collections under the direction of the Head of Data and GIS Services.
• Assists in building numeric and geospatial resources for Duke Libraries.
• With the assistance of the Data and GIS Librarians, provides support for electronic data sets and geospatial resources.

Education

Required: BA/BS and 1.) enrollment or a degree from a graduate level program in the Social Sciences 2.) enrollment or a degree from a MLS program accredited by the American Library Association 3.) equivalent experience in an academic library.

Experience

Required: Familiarity with library metadata standards; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and as a member of a team, willingness to speak to diverse groups; desire and interest to work with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and library staff. Preference will be given to applicants who have working experience using statistical and/or geospatial data collections. Students with a focus on Information Science are encouraged to apply.

Preferred: Experience working in a research library using numeric and gis data/metadata. Knowledge of databases/statistical software, metadata, and library systems.

Hiring Rate

$15.00 per hour. This position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

Hours

The internship is a temporary, part-time position available 9 hours per week for 12 months with possibility for renewal
